Harvard Glee Club at Ashmont

The joint concert of the Harvard Glee Club and the All Saints’ Choir of Men and Boys was incredible. Many thanks to all the HGC alumni who came out for the concert.

A few videos of the combined choirs can be seen on HGCF’s YouTube channel.

Final Rehearsal
Andrew Sheranian, Organist and Master of the Choristers at The Parish of All Saints, gives final comments to the combined choirs before the start of the concert

Conductors Receiving Applause

Andrew Sheranian (L) and Andrew Clark (R) receive applause from an appreciative audience.

The Star of the Show
This exuberant young treble stole the hearts of the entire audience.

And here’s the plaque that hangs on the wall on the way to the organ loft at All Saints. Click on the photo to enlarge and then notice the sixth name down from the top:  Dr. Archibald T. Davis, Organist and Choirmaster, 1906-1910, his last post before coming to Harvard.

On Tuesday, 27 March 2012, at 7:00 p.m., the Harvard Glee Club, and the All Saints’ Choir of Men and Boys, will present a free, one hour-long concert at All Saints (209 Ashmont Street in Dorchester, around the corner from the Ashmont T Station).

The musical directors of the groups—Andrew Sheranian (Ashmont) and Andrew Clark (Harvard)—have planned an evening of socializing and music-making culminating in a joint concert of the ensembles.

All are invited to this free concert, but you asked to make a special effort to bring along a boy (grade 3 through 6) who might be interested in our choir. This joint event with the Harvard Glee Club re-establishes an historical connection and is the beginning of an exciting new collaboration.

A bit of history:  In 1910, Dr. Archibald T. Davison (a Dorchester native) left his position as Organist & Choirmaster at All Saints to take the post of University Organist and Choirmaster at Harvard. In 1912, he began coaching Harvard Glee Club (HGC) members on vocal training and other aspects of choral music making. He became a beloved figure, and in 1919 he accepted the HGC’s invitation to become the group’s first conductor. Known as “Doc” Davison, he is credited with leading the HGC to the artistic heights and renown it continues to enjoy.

All Saints’ choir is one of only about 30 such men and boys choirs in the United States today, and it follows the English cathedral choral tradition of training and repertoire. At All Saints and in similar choirs, boys sing the highest or “treble” line in the music, while the alto, tenor, and bass lines are sung by adult men and boys with changed voices. In addition to a rigorous musical training, the boys are supported in developing strong leadership and other skills that serve them well in other parts of their lives. The All Saints choir is especially known for the diversity of its members, which reflects the makeup of the Parish and its Dorchester neighborhood.

HGC Alumni are especially invited to this event. Feel free to use this flyer to help us promote the concert:  AllSs-HvdGC-Flyer
